I acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung People; the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which I carry out all operations. This business has been built on stolen land, and I extend my respect to their Elders past and present. I also respectfully acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. I am committed to keep learning from the voices and perspectives of First Nations People. Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land.
Madeleine Jost is a designer and maker based in Wurundjeri Country, Melbourne, Australia.
Since graduating from RMIT with a Bachelor of Fashion Design (Honours), Madeleine was selected as one of Australia’s leading design graduates, winning her the opportunity to show her work both nationally and internationally.
Madeleine’s work typically references symbols of the home, with story-telling and memory deeply embedded in her practice. She treasures the discarded and passed-down, often incorporating fabrics which have lived a previous life.
Evident in many of Madeleine’s designs is her unique take on the traditional sewing technique of shirring. Her uneven and jumbled approach to shirring has become a trademark often found in her designs. This technique was originally born as a creative response to clothing and dementia studies; taking what was once structured and logical and altering it to be somewhat confusing and disrupted.
Creating original pieces which hold meaning and value beyond trend is incredibly important to Madeleine. Growing up along the Barwon River on Wathaurong Country, Geelong, taught her to cherish the natural environment, and made her hyper-aware of humans’ impact on the natural world. Each piece is mindfully handmade by Madeleine on Wurundjeri Country, Melbourne, and made to be worn with love.
